Pipe lagging matters disproportionately because of how it ages. Where the outer covering has split, been knocked, or been cut into during plumbing work, the insulating material underneath is exposed and can crumble. Boiler, furnace and duct insulation

Rigid insulating board and block were used around heating equipment, behind stoves and heaters, and as fire-resisting linings. These sit closer to the non-friable end of the range than sprayed or loose material while intact, but they were commonly cut and drilled during installation and are cut and drilled again during removal — which is the activity that generates dust.
